The stigma around discussing mental health needs to end. People are suffering in silence scared to ask for the help they need. At UNC-Chapel Hill, we have struggled to provide the necessary help for students. My mission is to be open and vulnerable about my mental health in hopes that others will be open as well.
Discussing the Relationship Between Mental Health and Stem
In this video, I interview Grace Hovekamp who is a Biology major and Medical Anthropology minor at UNC. During our conversation we discuss the stigma surrounding mental health and how it can be improved. Being a woman in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is not easy, but she proves that if you care about your goals they can be achieved.
Part of my identity is saying no to things I don’t want to do… I check in with myself throughout the day and I say, ‘Do I really want to do this?’ and if the answer is no, then I don’t do it. And you shouldn’t either.
